It's 11 p.m.
You're scrolling through photography websites on your phone.
You know you want photographs.
Maybe your baby is growing faster than you expected. Maybe a first birthday is coming up. Maybe you want updated family photographs before another year passes.
You find a Toronto Family photographer whose images make you stop scrolling.
Now comes the part nobody really prepares you for.
What should you ask before booking?
Most people start with the obvious:
How much is it?
Are you available on my date?
Those questions matter, but they aren't enough.
You also need to know what you're getting, when you'll see your photographs, how much planning the photographer will handle, and what happens if your child gets sick or something unexpected happens.
So before you put down a deposit, here are four questions I think every parent should ask.
And if the answers don't feel right, I'll also tell you when I think you should keep looking.
1. What Does the Session Price Actually Include?
Start with the money.
Ask how long the session lasts.
Ask how many edited photographs are included.
Ask how the images are delivered.
Ask whether you choose your photographs or the photographer chooses them.
Find out whether props are included.
Ask whether you need to provide your own outfits.
And ask if there are additional charges you should know about before booking.
Two photographers can have similar-looking prices and offer completely different experiences.
One might provide a short session and a small number of digital photographs.
Another might spend several hours with your family. They may provide props, help with styling, guide you through the session, and deliver a much larger collection.
That's why looking at the price alone can be misleading.
Think about plane tickets.
One ticket may look cheaper at first. Then you discover that your bag costs extra. Your seat costs extra. Suddenly, the original price doesn't tell you the whole story.
The cheapest option isn't always the least expensive option.
You simply need to know what's included.
So, don't look for the most affordable family photographer in Toronto.

My photography sessions are available in your home, at my studio, or outdoors around Toronto and the surrounding areas.
For Toronto outdoor family photographs, we can choose a location based on the look you want.
You might prefer the greenery and open spaces of High Park. You might want a more urban downtown atmosphere. Humber Bay Park can also give your photographs a completely different feel.
My sessions price start at $300 for one hour and 10 edited images.
Here are the starting prices:
Family sessions: from $300
Children's sessions: from $300
Adult sessions: from $300
Newborn sessions: from $350
These are starting prices.
Longer sessions and larger collections cost more, depending on what you choose.
Session length can range from about one hour to two or three hours. Newborn sessions start at approximately one and a half hours because babies often need extra time.
They may need feeding, soothing, changing, or simply a little patience.
I also provide what you need for newborn sessions, including wraps, outfits, and props.
For one-year-old sessions, I provide dresses for little girls as well.

2. How Long Will I Wait for My Finished Photographs?
Don't settle for an answer like “soon.”
Ask for an actual timeframe.
Every photographer has a different editing schedule. A longer turnaround does not automatically mean poor service. Professional editing takes time, especially after a large family or newborn session.
Still, you need to know what to expect before you pay.
Maybe you need photographs for a birthday.
Maybe you're planning an announcement.
Perhaps you're buying photographs as a gift.
Whatever the reason, the delivery date matters.
My Delivery Process Works Differently
You receive your unedited images on the same day as your session.
You can sit down and look through everything.
Then you choose the photographs you want professionally edited.
Once you've made your selections, I edit them and deliver your finished images through your online gallery.
Your final edited photographs are delivered within seven working days.
That means you're not waiting weeks just to find out how your session turned out.
You see your images first.
You choose the ones you love.
Then I handle the final editing.
So when you're comparing photographers, don't only ask, “When will I get my pictures?”
Ask three things:
When will I first see them?
How do I choose them?
When will I receive the finished photographs?
Those answers give you a much clearer picture of the entire process.
3. How Much Help Will I Get Before and During the Session?
This question can make a huge difference.
You might know that you want family photograph in Toronto, but that doesn't mean you know how to plan them.
Will the photographer help you decide what everyone should wear?
Will she help coordinate colours?
Can she help you decide between a home, studio, or outdoor session?
Will she direct you once you're standing in front of the camera?
Or are you expected to figure all of that out yourself?
Different photographers work differently.
Neither approach is automatically wrong.
The important thing is knowing what kind of experience you're paying for.
If you haven't had photographs taken in years, being told to “just be yourself” may not be particularly helpful.
I Don't Expect You to Arrive Knowing What to Do
I help clients with outfits, colour choices, and coordinating everyone's clothing.
The goal is for everyone to look connected without looking like they were dressed in matching uniforms.
If you're unsure about the type of session you want, we can talk about that too.
I can help you decide whether your home, my studio, or an outdoor location makes the most sense.
I also guide you during the actual session.
You don't need to know where to put your hands.
You don't need to figure out how to stand.
You don't need to memorize poses.
For outdoor sessions, I use prompts that encourage you and your family to interact.
That helps create photographs that feel natural instead of overly stiff or posed.
Whether you're coming from Scarborough, North York, Vaughan, downtown Toronto, or one of the surrounding suburbs, you can arrive without knowing how to pose.
I'll guide you.
Your Child Does Not Have to Behave Perfectly
Let me tell you something else.
Your family doesn't have to look perfect for your photographs to be beautiful.
Your baby might cry.
Your toddler might decide they would rather run around.
Someone might need a snack.
Your partner might not enjoy having their picture taken.
You might feel awkward.
None of that means the session is ruined.
You don't have to make your children behave perfectly. That's a photographer's job.
I give children time to get comfortable.
I interact with them.
I watch for the moments that happen naturally.
I recently photographed a one-year-old girl at my studio who was extremely fussy.
Her mom told me that her daughter thought they were coming to a hospital.
She disliked hospitals, so she wasn't comfortable in the space.
She didn't want to sit still.
She wasn't feeling her best.
Her mom started worrying that we wouldn't get good photographs.
I didn't rush her.
We played.
I used toys.
We played peekaboo.
I interacted with her and waited for those small moments when she relaxed enough for me to photograph her.
Her mom had been so worried that she expected the photographs to turn out badly.
When I showed them to her, she was surprised.
She looked at me and said:
“You tried your best.”
She loved the photographs.
She also told me she would book with me again soon.
That experience reminded me of something I believe strongly.
A child does not have to sit perfectly still for a photograph to be beautiful.
Sometimes you have to slow down.
Sometimes you have to play.
Sometimes you simply have to meet the child where they are.
What Happens After You Send That First Message?
This is another thing I think parents should understand before booking.
You shouldn't have to wonder what happens after you inquire.
My process is simple.
First, You Inquire
Tell me what you're looking for.
Tell me who will be photographed.
Share anything specific you have in mind for your session.
Then You Book
Once you're ready, I'll send you a booking link.
You choose your date and time, reserve your spot, and pay your deposit.
Then We Plan
After your deposit is paid, I'll send you the information you need for your session.
You'll receive the location, session details, the amount you've paid, and your remaining balance.
I'll also help with your outfit and other session preparations.
I ask questions about you and your family because I want to understand what you're hoping for.
Those answers help me personalize your session.
If you want to talk through outfits or other details more carefully, we can also speak by phone.
Then You Come to Your Session
That's the easy part.
You arrive.
We photograph your family.
I guide you through the session.
Then you go home.
Then You Choose Your Images
Later that same day, I'll send you your unedited photographs.
You look through them and choose your favourites.
You send your selections back to me.
Then I professionally edit those photographs.
Within seven working days, your final images are delivered through your online gallery.
That's the whole process.
You don't need to guess what happens next.
4. What Happens If Life Gets in the Way?
This isn't the most exciting question.
It's still one you should ask.
What happens if your child gets sick?
What if it rains on your outdoor session?
What if something unexpected happens and you can't attend?
What if the photographer becomes sick?
Families with young children know that plans can change quickly.
Children get sick.
Weather changes.
Life happens.
You need to know what the photographer's policy is before you book.
Here's How I Handle It
If your child becomes sick, please let me know as soon as possible.
The earlier you tell me, the better.
Your deposit is non-refundable, but your session can be rescheduled when you provide proper notice.
Outdoor sessions can also be rescheduled if the weather makes the session unsuitable.
There is no point forcing everyone outside in conditions that won't give us the photographs we want.
If I become sick or something prevents me from photographing your session, I'll communicate with you and arrange a new date.
I would rather reschedule than ask you to bring a sick child to a session.
I would also rather reschedule than have everyone uncomfortable because we're forcing the shoot to happen.
What Happens to Your Photographs Afterwards?
Ask this question too.
After your session, I keep your photographs stored on a flash drive for up to one year.
After that period, they are deleted.
Your photographer's file-storage policy is something you should understand before booking.
Don't assume your images will always be available.
Ask.
When Should You Keep Looking for Another Photographer?
Here is where I'll be completely honest.
You can love a photographer's portfolio and still decide she's not right for your family.
That's okay.
Keep looking if they won't clearly explain what you're paying for.
Keep looking if you can't get a straight answer about the delivery timeline.
Keep looking if you need guidance but the photographer expects you to handle all the planning yourself.
Keep looking if the photographer's policies don't work for your family.
And please don't book someone based only on how much you love their photographs.
The person behind the camera matters too.
You're trusting that person with your children.
You want someone who understands that babies don't always cooperate.
You want someone who won't panic when a toddler needs a break.
You want someone who can guide you when you feel awkward.
You want someone who listens when you have an idea.
You also want someone whose process makes you feel comfortable.
If you love a photographer's work but the price isn't within your budget right now, that's okay.
Photography is an investment.
If you genuinely love someone's work and those are the photographs you want displayed in your home for years, you may decide the investment is worth it.
But please don't put yourself under financial pressure just to book photographs.
There will be another opportunity.
And if you aren't ready to book a professional session yet, don't let that stop you from photographing your family.
Use your phone.
Take the messy photographs.
Take the silly ones.
Take the pictures where your toddler refuses to look at the camera.
Print some.
Put them on the refrigerator.
Your children are growing while you're busy doing everything else.
The photograph doesn't have to be perfect.
Sometimes the photograph you'll treasure most is simply the one that takes you back to how little they were.
Asking Questions Doesn't Make You Difficult
You aren't being annoying.
You're making an informed decision.
Ask about the price.
Ask what's included.
Ask how long the session lasts.
Ask when you'll see your photographs.
Ask when the final images will arrive.
Ask whether you need to bring anything.
Ask about outfits.
Ask how much direction you'll receive.
Ask what happens if your child has a bad day.
Ask what happens to your files after delivery.
A photographer who is a good fit should be comfortable answering these questions.
If the answers don't feel right, you have your answer.
Honestly, ask me all four.
I'd rather answer your questions before you book than have you wondering what happens next.
